Fall Meeting date: Friday, Dec 14th, 10:30am, at the Library for the Performing Arts

December 3, 2012

Dear GNYMLA members,

The fall meeting of the Greater New York MLA chapter will be held on Friday, Dec 14, 2012, at 10:30am, at NYPL’s Library for the Performing Arts. We will meet inside the entrance to the Library for the Performing Arts at Amsterdam Ave. and W. 65th St.

Jonathan Hiam, the Curator of the American Music Collection and the Rodgers and Hammerstein Archives of Recorded Sound, has generously offered to make a presentation to the group. A short business meeting will follow, and we’ll have an informal lunch meeting in the area for any interested members. Further details on the meeting agenda will follow shortly.

I hope to see many of you there for what is sure to be an interesting presentation. I’m also hoping to get your input on what activities and direction the GNYMLA chapter can take over the next year. Bring any ideas on what the chapter can do to enhance the work of our members.

Please send me any items you might like to see on the agenda. There will also be an opportunity to check/update your membership at the meeting, if needed. You can also do this using the PayPal link in the righthand sidebar

It would be helpful if you can RSVP, simply by emailing me at patterson@columbia.edu, so we have an idea about head-count. Hope to see you all soon!

Meeting Minutes for June 26, 2012

September 7, 2012

On June 26 the GNYMLA met at the NYPL Service Center located in Long Island City.  After our business meeting, we got a tour of the archival processing facilities and the book sorter. Video of the book sorter has been posted on our facebook page.  Thanks to Sally Bauer (Vice-Chair) for putting this tour together; it was a highly informative and entertaining meeting. This was especially true for those of us thinking about offering request and branch delivery
services at our own libraries.
The business meeting was short but focused on two topics:

We plan to hold elections for the Chair of the GNYMLA sometime in August.  Please contact the nominating committee chair (Kenneth Kauffman, kkauffman@rider.edu) if you would like to run. The elections will be done electronically, as they were done last year.

A link to the 2012-2013 membership form has been made available here, on the GNYMLA home page. This is also a reminder that you can now save a stamp and pay with PayPal. More information on this is linked to the membership page.

Thanks,

Andrew Toulas

GNYMLA Chair

Discussion of GNYMLA chapter’s executive structure @ MLA 2011

February 7, 2011

Hello GNYMLA members,

Please note that there will be a discussion of the GNYMLA chapter’s executive structure and length of terms for officers, at the upcoming chapter business meeting, which will take place on Thursday, 2/10 from 5-6pm, in room Commonwealth C at the 2011 MLA meeting in Philadelphia.

Following up on issues raised by Andy Toulas (Chair) during our Fall 2010 meeting, there will be a discussion of what other MLA local chapters do re: officer terms of service and elections. The GNYMLA chapter is currently the *only* chapter where all officers are elected (and leave) all at the same time. The issue is that this may lead to gaps in continuity and in unnecessarily rough transitions, and the chapter may benefit from adjusting our structure to be more in line with general MLA local chapter practice.

I’ve posted a survey of the structure of officers’ terms and elections at other MLA local chapters, in a PDF at this link:

http://www.box.net/shared/uq9vli6dht

Please take a look, and bring your ideas to the chapter’s business meeting in Philadelphia. If you will not be attending the meeting, feel free to comment here, on the GNYMLA listserv, or on our Facebook page. You can also email me comments directly at patterson@columbia.edu.

Hope to see many of you in Philadelphia!

Best, /Nick
