The meeting will start with a tour, followed by a presentation in the Education Center.

It will be helpful to have a head count of planned attendees, so, please RSVP to Barbara Walzer, Vice-Chair, (bwalzer@sarahlawrence.edu) if you plan on attending.

The GNYMLA business meeting will follow. Andy Toulas (Chair) will send out further details on the full agenda. Please note: discussion of the election of the next slate of Officers is on the agenda, as well as some proposed revisions to the By-Laws of the chapter, so please attend and participate in the discussions and any votes that may be held – the chapter needs your participation!

Lastly – a new membership year will begin as of the end of June. Please renew your membership for the 2011-12 year. I will be accepting cash and checks for membership renewals at the meeting.

No formal plans for lunch after the meeting have been made; details on on informal lunch plans and possible venues will be forthcoming.

Please note that there will be a discussion of the GNYMLA chapter’s executive structure and length of terms for officers, at the upcoming chapter business meeting, which will take place on Thursday, 2/10 from 5-6pm, in room Commonwealth C at the 2011 MLA meeting in Philadelphia.

Following up on issues raised by Andy Toulas (Chair) during our Fall 2010 meeting, there will be a discussion of what other MLA local chapters do re: officer terms of service and elections. The GNYMLA chapter is currently the *only* chapter where all officers are elected (and leave) all at the same time. The issue is that this may lead to gaps in continuity and in unnecessarily rough transitions, and the chapter may benefit from adjusting our structure to be more in line with general MLA local chapter practice.

Talbott Library, part of Rider University Libraries, supports the music curriculum of Westminster Choir College of Rider University, located in Princeton, NJ. Talbott’s collections comprise over 67,000 books, music scores and periodicals, approximately 5,400 choral music titles in performance quantities, a choral music reference collection of over 80,000 titles, and over 23,000 sound and video recordings. Additionally, exceptional holdings are found in the library’s special collections

Our itinerary for the day is diverse and informative.

10:30 -11:30:  Coffee / refreshments, tour of the library collection, and business meeting.

11:30 -12:30: Observe rehearsal of Westminster Symphonic Choir

12:30 -2:00: Lunch in downtown Princeton, possibly ‘lunch on your own’ or ‘in small groups’ depending on the head count.

2:30 – 3:30: Tour of the ReCAP facility*. http://recap.princeton.edu

In June 2000, Columbia University, Princeton University and The New York Public Library signed a partnership agreement to jointly construct and operate a remote high-density book shelving facility. The newly formed partnership is officially entitled The Research Collections and Preservation (ReCAP) Consortium, Inc.
These major research libraries agreed to store their low use items at ReCAP. You are invited to browse the website.
 
**First we will begin with the history, take a walking tour of the facility with an explanation of our process and then finish with questions and answers.

You do not need to be a chapter member to attend but we request that you advise us if you plan to come.  Neighboring chapter members may also find this program valuable.

The morning session consisted of two presentations and a business meeting:

• Elizabeth Davis (Head, Music & Arts Library, Columbia University) – “The Alice M. Ditson Fund: A force for American music”
• Nick Patterson (Access/Circ Supervisor, Music & Arts Library, Columbia University) – “Archives of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center”

Following these presentations Andy Toulas (Chair) opened the business meeting, and solicited feedback on the Facebook page as a forum for discussion of GNYMLA topics. Information was also shared regarding the discussion of copyright and digital audio that had taken place at MLA 2010 meeting in San Diego.

Additionally, it was mentioned that Renee McBride from the MLA Publicity & Outreach committee is collecting information regarding MLA members speaking about music librarianship to the community. An example of this would be addressing prospective library school students about music librarianship. If anyone has done this, or has plans to do this type of activity, please notify the local chair and this information will be collected and reported to Renee.

Nick Patterson (Secy-Treasurer) provided a brief financial report, and raised the idea of the GNY chapter considering the funding of a travel award or some similar award to encourage librarianship. The issue of the importance of the sustainability of such an award or similar grant was raised. More discussion on this was encouraged (on Facebook and/or the listserv). Details of the current membership year (July 2010 – June 2011) were announced, and a request was made to members to renew their memberships!.

The business meeting included a discussion of the proposed
coordination/merger of MLA and IAML-US, presented by Elizabeth Davis. Voting on this issue will take place at a later date, through the national MLA.

The group discussed and seemed interested in the addition of an online payment option; PayPal was mentioned specifically. It has a low-cost system available that might offer convenience to our members. Nick will investigate further details.

After the business meeting we broke for lunch.

The afternoon session offered a presentation of materials from the
Columbia University Rare Book and Manuscript Library by Performing Arts Curator Jennifer Lee. Selected photographs from this exhibit as well as the local meeting are available through the photo section of the GNYMLA Facebook page.

We’d like to note that there were several first-time attendees, and hope that we’ll see them join the ranks of the Greater New York chapter. Looking forward to seeing many of you soon, on the Facebook page, listserv, or in person!

ARSC New York Chapter
December 2009 Meeting

FEATURING LEAH BIEL,
WHO WILL INTRODUCE HER DOCUMENTARY FILM
“For the Record”

As the daughter of Mike Biel, an extraordinarily enterprising “omnivore” collector and major ARSC presence, Leah has grown up with and developed an unusually keen appreciation of the collector’s personality and foibles.

“For the Record” is a one-hour video documentary that examines the activity of record collecting from a positive view of 16 collectors, many of whom are ARSC members. Traveling from Toronto to Texas, from Connecticut to Kentucky, I visited most of the collectors in their home base where you will see them, their collections, and even some archival footage from ARSC conventions past. The video was done as my thesis for the Master of Fine Arts degree at Brooklyn College”.

Introduced at last spring’s ARSC Conference in Washington, D.C., “For the Record” is both informative and richly entertaining.
